Bootcamp Chapter 15 Flashcards
Fixed Action Pattern
an innate behavior that is initiated by a specific stimulus
example - goose notices that an egg has rolled out, so she uses her beak to take it back in. However, it can be anything that resembles her egg - she will continue to roll it back in
Classical conditioning
two stimuli are linked together to produce a new learned response in a person or animal.
Operant Conditioning
when an animal learns to associate one of its behaviors with either a reward or punishment
Sensitization
increased response to a repeated stimulus
Habituation
decreased behavioral response in the face of a repetitive meaningless stimulus
Differentiate between kinesis, taxis, and migration
kinesis - change in speed in random directions
taxis - movement in a specific direction, either towards or away from a stimulus
migration - long distance movement of animals due to instinct
Semelparity
animals that mate only once during their entire life
Iteroparity
animals that mate many times during the course of the life cycle
