The actions that take place within the engine cylinder may be divided into four basic parts, which are called
Strokes
The first stroke in the sequence is called the______ ____ During this stroke, the _____ is moving downward-and the intake valve is open.
Intake stroke
Piston
When the piston reaches bottom dead center at the end of the intake stroke and is, therefore, at the bottom of the cylinder, the intake valve closes. This seals the upper end of the cylinder. As the crankshaft continues to rotate, it pushes up through the connecting rod on the piston. The piston is, therefore, pushed upward and compresses the cylinder; this is called
Compression stroke.
As the piston reaches top dead center at the end of the compression stroke and therefore has moved to the top of the cylinder, the compressed fuel-air mixture is ignited by an electric spark.
Power stroke
After the fuel-air mixture has burned, it must be cleared from the cylinder. This is done by opening the exhaust valve just as the power stroke is finished and the piston starts back up on the exhaust stroke. The piston forces the burned gases out of the cylinder past the opened exhaust valve.
Exhaust stroke
In the 2- stroke-cycle engine, every other stroke on this engine is a ____ _____
Power stroke.
2 stroke: each time the piston moves _____it is on the power stroke. it first uncovers the ______port to let burned gases escape and then uncovers the intake port to allow a new fuel-air mixture to enter the combustion chamber.
Down
Exhaust
2 stroke:
The carburetor is attached to the ____ into the ________ through which the fuel-air mixture passes before it enters the cylinder.
Inlet
Crankcase
In principles of operation, the main difference between gasoline and diesel engines (Pg. 3) is the two different methods of introducing the ____ into the cylinder and igniting the fuel-air mixture.
Fuel
____ alone enters the cylinder of a diesel engine. The air is compressed by the upstroke of the piston and the diesel fuel is injected into the ______ _______near the top of the upstroke (compression stroke).
Air
Combustion chamber
In this type of two-cycle engine, oil is mixed with the gasoline to lubricate the
bearings and cylinder walls.
The _____ engine is mechanically similar to the gasoline engine, but is somewhat heavier in construction.
Diesel
In principles of operation, the main difference between gasoline and diesel engines (Pg. 3) is the two different methods of introducing the _____ into the cylinder and igniting the _____-___ _____
Fuel
Fuel-air mixture
Air alone enters the cylinder of a diesel engine. The air is compressed by the _____ of the piston and the diesel fuel is injected into the ________ ______near the top of the upstroke (compression stroke).
Upstroke
Combustion chamber
No ____ _____ is used-in the diesel engine; ignition is by contact of the fuel with the heated air, although “_____ _____” are used in some models of diesel engines to assist in starting.
Spark plugs
Glow plugs
Pressure developed by the compression stroke is much greater in the diesel engine, in which pressures as high as ____ p.s.i. are common.
500 psi
Diesel engines:
For each pound of pressure exerted on the air, there will be a temperature increase of about ____ At the top of the compression stroke (when pressure is highest), the temperature in the chamber will be about ____
20F
1000F
The speed and the power output of diesel engines are controlled by the quantity of _____injected into the cylinder. This is opposed to the common gasoline engine, which controls speed and power output by limiting the amount of ___admitted to the _______
Fuel
Air
Carburetor
the cycle of the gasoline engine is often referred to as having ______-_____ combustion while the diesel cycle is said to have ______-_____combustion.
Constant volume
Constant pressure
Diesel:
The engine must be ___ to develop horsepower
Rotating
The purpose of the power train is to transmit the power of the engine to the ____ ____.
Drive wheels
The _______ stores up energy of rotation when the instantaneous torque on the crankshaft is greater than average, and releases this energy when the torque is less than average
Flywheel
The flywheel rim carries a ____ ____that meshes with the starter driving gear for cranking the engine.
Ring gear
The rear face of the flywheel is usually machined and ground, and acts as one of the ____ _____for the clutch, becoming part of the clutch assembly.
Pressure surfaces
By means of the ____, the operator can harness the power of the engine, by connecting or disconnecting the engine from the power train.
Clutch
The clutch operates on the principal of friction between the driving members and the driven members. The driving members are the______, the pressure ____ and usually an ______ _____.
Flywheel, pressure plate, intermediate plate
The driven members are the ____ ____ which are attached to the input shaft of the ______.
Clutch plates
Transmission
The _____ _____ applies spring pressure to the clutch plates as it squeezes the driving members and the driven members together.
Pressure plate
It is very important that the clutch is not allowed to slip for more than about _____seconds.
1 1/2
The purpose of the _____ ____ is to stop the rotation of the gears in the road transmission.
Clutch brake
A clutch brake consists of two stationary members, two ____ ____, and a _____ member.
Two fiber disks
Revolving member
The revolving member is attached to the _______ _____ ______.
Transmission input shaft
REMEMBER ! THE CLUTCH BRAKE IS DESIGNED-TO STOP THE GEARS IN THE TRANSMISSION WHEN THE ______ PEDAL IS FULLY DEPRESSED.
Clutch
The _______ portion of the drive train, must be capable of transmitting power at a variety of speed and torque requirements.
Transmission
is a force which will rotate or twist an object such as a shaft.
Torque
___ can be used to increase or decrease the amount of torque.
Gears
When a small gear drives a larger gear, the result is an increase in
Torque
Selective type manual transmissions consist of the ____ shaft, the _______ (some transmissions have two countershafts), and the ____ shaft -(also known as the output shaft).
Input shaft
Countershaft
Main shaft
The ______ _____ is connected to the engine by a fluid coupling or torque converter instead of a clutch assembly.
Automatic transmission
The____ ____ serves two primary functions. First, it acts as a fluid coupling to smoothly connect engine power through oil to the ______ gear train. Second, it multiplies the torque, or twisting effort, from the engine when additional performance is desired.
Torque converter
Transmission
The torque converter consists of three basic elements:
The pump (driving member), the turbine (driven or output member), and the stator (reaction member).
The _______ _____cover is bolted to the engine flex-plate which is bolted directly to the engine crankshaft
Converter pump
When the engine is running and the converter pump is spinning, it acts as a _______ ______picking up oil at its center and discharging this oil at its rim between the blades.
Centrifugal pump
The _____is located between the pump and the turbine and is mounted on a one-way or roller clutch which allows it to rotate clockwise but not counter-clockwise.
Stator
The purpose of the stator is to ______ the oil returning from the turbine and change its direction of rotation back to that of the pump member.
Redirect
With the engine operating at full throttle, transmission in gear, and the vehicle standing still, the converter is capable of multiplying engine torque by approximately ____to ___.
2.2 to 1
