Blood vessels Flashcards
Aterioles
A smaller type of blood vessel that connects arteries with capillaries.
Veins
A type of blood vessel that carries blood into the heart from other parts of the body.
Features of veins:
- Wide lumen
- Thin muscle wall
- Elastic tissue in the walls
- Valves to control blood flow
Capillaries
A very small blood vessel with thin walls and a small diameter used for substance
exchange in tissues.
Features of capillaries:
- Endothelium is one cell thick - short diffusion distance
- Capillary bed surrounding the body cells
- Pass very close to the body cells
Tissue fluid
Combination of oxygen, water and nutrients. The fluid surrounds the cells in the body.
Venules
larger than capillaries but smaller than veins.
Hydrostatic pressure
created when blood is pumped along the arteries, into arterioles and then capillaries. This pressure forces blood fluid out of the capillaries.
The lymphatic system contains
lymph fluid, However, lymph fluid contains less oxygen and nutrients compared to tissue fluid, as its
main purpose is to carry waste products. The lymph system also contains lymph nodes which filter out bacteria and foreign material from the fluid with the help of lymphocytes which destroy pathogens as part of the immune system defences.
