Active transport Flashcards
Active transport
The active movement of substances from a low concentration to a higher concentration (up their concentration gradient) with the use of energy in the form of ATP.
Give an example of Active transport
Sugar absorption in the gut
Mineral absorption in plants
The main factors that affect the rate if Active transport
- The surface area of cell membranes.
- The number of carrier proteins in cell membranes.
Co-transport
A method of membrane transport where two substances are both transported across a membrane at the same time either in the same direction or opposite directions.
How are sodium ions actively transported in the blood?
By Sodium-potassium ATPase from the inside of epithelial cells lining the ileum.
Is the concentration so Sodium ions higher or low inside the cell?
Lower in the inside than the outside
Which ion binds to cotransporter proteins to transport glucose into the epithelial cells in the ileum?
Sodium ions
How many Na+ ions from the lumen of the ileum bind to the sodium-glucose cotransporter?
2 sodium ions
Which of the following processes does NOT happen via active transport?
Movement of water up xylem vessles
What ion is co-transported into the ileum with glucose/ amino acids?
Sodium ions
