BLOCK 9: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH - Unit 14: Non-potable Water Sources (complete) Flashcards
This document not only describes how to operate and maintain swimming pools, public spas and hot tubs, and other bathing areas but also assigns responsibility to Air Force agencies to ensure clean and safe swimming and bathing environments.
AFMAN 48-114, Recreational Waters and Mission Training
Pools
Water that is not of drinking water quality but may still be used for many other purposes.
NONPOTABLE WATER
Construct and maintain swimming pools and public spas and hot tubs. They also operate and maintain the pool treatment equipment.
CIVIL ENGINEERING (WATER AND FUELS SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE)
Oversee the general day-to-day operation of recreational waters to provide patrons with sanitary and safe conditions and employees with a safe, healthful workplace.
FORCE SUPPORT SQUADRON
Perform routine facility sanitation inspections of food preparation and other areas. They also perform epidemiological monitoring for potential disease outbreaks and participate in inspections, as necessary.
PUBLIC HEALTH
Perform safety inspections, as necessary, to ensure the continuous safe and sanitary operation and maintenance of all pools, hot tubs, spas, and natural bathing areas.
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
- Water quality supervision
- Participation in pre-season, post-season, and other inspections, as necessary
- Bacteriological monitoring in support of specific requests attributable to disease outbreaks
- Reviews of engineering designs for new and/or modified swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs
- Identification, analysis, and control recommendations for any associated OEH hazards
BIOENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
BE tests what pool water characteristics?
- pH
- Disinfectant residual
- Bacteriological quality (in support of specific requests)
The ____________________ is primarily responsible for conducting pH and disinfectant residual testing day-to-day.
BATHING FACILITY MANAGER (or lifeguard)
However, BE personnel periodically perform these tests as well. On a monthly basis, BE measures pH and disinfectant residual levels.
The pH and chlorine tests are performed at _______________ of the pool and the results are averaged.
ALL 4 CORNERS
The __________ is the most common method of determining disinfectant residual.
DPD TEST KIT
What is the acceptable pH range for pools, spas, and hot tubs?
7.2 - 7.8 pH
If bacteriological sampling is conducted, refer to _______________ for guidance.
40 CFR 131.41
__________ can be used as the indicator organism for evaluating the microbiological suitability of the water in freshwater natural bathing areas.
E. COLI
Inspections performed approximately 30 days prior to opening the pool to allow time for corrective actions to be implemented, if necessary.
PRE SEASON INSPECTIONS
