BLOCK 2: CHEMICAL HAZARDS - Unit 6: Safety Data Sheets, Hazardous Materials, Workplace-Specific Hazard Communication (complete) Flashcards
The primary source of information designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance in the workplace. It provides information on the hazardous properties of the chemical products within the substance or mixture.
SAFETY DATA SHEET (SDS)

Safety Data Sheet
The specific objective of the _______________ is to establish a framework for collecting and maintaining data on all HAZMAT that enters an Air
Force installation. The goal is to know who uses hazardous chemicals, how they are used and where they ultimately go.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS MANAGEMENT PROCESS (HMMP)
The standard AF HAZMAT tracking system used by installation personnel to request, authorize, and track hazardous materials.
Enterprise Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Management Information System (EESOH-MIS)
A _______________is the only entity on an installation authorized to issue government-owned HAZMAT from any source. They track the receipt and issue of HAZMAT in EESOH-MIS and ensure that all requests for HAZMAT have an authorization prior to issue.
HAZMART (Hazardous Material Pharmacy)
In the event that EESOH-MIS is unavailable, installations may use the ____________________ to accomplish HAZMAT requests and authorizations. However, information from paper forms must be entered into EESOH-MIS to support continued tracking, authorization, and reporting.
AF Form 3952, Chemical Hazardous Material Request Authorization Form
BE’s role in the authorization process is to determine if there are any occupational health-related concerns with the hazardous material being requested.
TRUE OR FALSE:
Work centers which are approved to use HAZMAT must maintain a current inventory of the materials present in the work area.
TRUE
The inventory is a reflection of all chemicals used in that work center and it includes information such as the specific chemical name and manufacturer. An electronic or hard copy inventory can be used to meet this requirement.
Every shop is required to have a HAZCOM program and, thus, a HAZCOM program binder.
This binder will contain certain documents and information.
At a minimum, the binder should include:
- A copy of AFI 90-821 in its entirety.
- A workplace-specific HAZCOM program.
Each workplace will create and maintain a current list of hazardous chemicals. Ensure that the list is updated and contains ALL of the hazardous chemicals used in the workplace. In addition to reviewing this document, BE technicians should also conduct a walkthrough to ensure the document’s accuracy. This document is called _______________. (building block)

EMPLOYEE INFORMATION AND TRAINING
Supervisors and employees who handle, use, or are potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals in the course of official AF duties must be provided HAZCOM training prior to the use of hazardous chemicals.
Supervisor training
All work area supervisors must review USAFSAM’s supervisor HAZCOM training initially and as needed to maintain competency. Prior to assuming supervisory duties in a new work area, supervisors must review the existing work area-specific HAZCOM training plan and substance-specific standard training, if required in the work area.
Initial worker training
Workers will receive comprehensive work area-specific HAZCOM training from their supervisors at the time of an initial assignment in a work area.
Supplemental worker training
Training for all potentially affected employees is required when a new chemical hazard that the employees have not previously been trained about is introduced into the work area. The work area-specific training plan must be updated with the information concerning the new
hazard or chemical and reviewed and approved by BE, PH, Occupational Safety, Fire Emergency Services (FES), and any other locally determined organizations as necessary.
When evaluating the training portion of the HAZCOM programs, BE technicians must remember to check not only the workplace-specific training programs but also the Air Force Form 55. In addition, it is common practice for the BE technician evaluating this program to interview a few
of the workers to ensure that they are competent with regards to this program. The following are some common things to cover during the interview:
- Where are the SDSs located?
- Please show me how you would look up a chemical using your SDSs.
- Why is the HAZCOM program an important part of worker safety?
