BLOCK 7: IONIZING RADIATION - Unit 1: Roles and Responsibilities (complete) Flashcards
In general, BE’s role is to support the IRSO responsibilities as outlined in _______________.
AFMAN 48-148 Ionizing Radiation Protection
Which include but are not limited to: at least annual periodic reviews of procedures and practices; facility design and classification; training (specifically “as low as reasonably achievable” [ALARA] training); exposure control; monitoring; and surveillance activities.
Identifies and establishes the methods used to protect workers and the public from all forms of radiation.
RADIATION SAFETY PROGRAM
This includes recommending controlled areas, engineering controls, administrative controls, personal protective equipment (PPE), warning devices, and posting requirements. BE advises local commanders during contingency operations on the potential for personnel injuries from radiation emissions.
Regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials (such as in nuclear medicine) through licensing, inspection, and enforcement of its requirements.
NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC)
Composed of members throughout the Air Force, is responsible for providing regulatory oversight for the use of radioactive materials by Air Force organizations (except weapons-related materials falling under Section 91(b) of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954).
RADIOISOTOPE COMMITTEE (RIC)
The ____________________ is an independent agency established by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974.
NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC)
Air Force communication with the NRC is accomplished through the ____________________.
RADIOISOTOPE COMMITTEE (RIC)
Provides consultant support to the installation commander on radiation protection issues,
and keeps the installation commanders informed about radiation health and safety issues and effectiveness of measures to control radiation hazards.
INSTALLATION RADIATION SAFETY OFFICER (IRSO)
The IRSO, in most instances, is the base Bioenvironmental Engineer who has had additional radiation safety training.
Provide consultant support to organization/unit commanders on radiation protection issues. They keep organization/unit commanders and the IRSO informed about radiation health and safety issues and effectiveness of measures to control ionizing radiation hazards.
Permit RSO (PRSO) & Unit RSO (URSO)
The PRSO and URSO establish and manage the organization/unit radiation safety program, AFMAN 48-148, to include the following activities:
- Training
- Routine monitoring
- Surveillance activities
- Exposure control activities
- Review of procedures and practices
- Facility design review and classification
The ____________________ establishes and manages the base radiation safety program through training, surveillance, and control recommendations.
INSTALLATION RADIATION SAFETY OFFICER (IRSO)
The role of the _______________ is to ensure workers follow all safety procedures, prepare the radiation frequency report, and conduct safety awareness training for all personnel that may have radiation exposure. They are also responsible for informing BE of new processes or changes to current processes involving any form of radiation.
WORKPLACE SUPERVISOR
_______________ are obligated to follow safety procedures as outlined in AF standards, equipment technical orders (TOs), manuals, and unit operating instructions (OIs), and they must practice safe working conditions.
WORKERS
_______________ is the central focal point and expert on radiation hazards and biological effects with support from the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
BIOENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING (BE)
The RIC approves controls for acquiring, receiving, storing, distributing, using, transferring, and disposing of radioactive material to ensure compliance with the Air Force ____________________ License, NRC policy and guidance, other applicable regulatory requirements, and DoD and Air Force directives and instructions.
