Biology Midterm: chp 36 Flashcards
trophic level
feeding level in an ecosystem ex: quaternary consumers ^ tertiary consumers ^ secondary consumer ^ primary consumer ^ producer
Carbon and oxygen cycled through an ecosystem
- producers use carbon and oxygen atoms of these inorganic compounds to form organic compounds during photosynthesis
- respiration during the carbon oxygen cycle released CO⬇️2
how human activities can impact chemical cycles
human activities such as deforestation affects chemical cycles because it eliminates plants that absorb carbon dioxide which means it affects the carbon cycle because the carbon in the atmosphere rises
how pollution affects food chains
pollution can affect food chains because an organism will eat pollutants (along with other nutrients and water) that collect in their tissue and when an organism eats another organism the pollutants become more concentrated
producers
photosynthetic organisms that convert light energy from sunlight to the chemical energy of organic compounds (plants)
decomposers
obtain energy by breaking down wastes and dead organisms
consumers
obtain chemical energy by feeding on producers or on other consumers
food chain
pathway of food transfer from one trophic level to another
herbivore
consumer that only eats producers
carnivore
consumer that eats only other consumers
omnivore
consumer that eats both producers and consumers
detritus
wastes and remains of dead organisms
food web
pattern made by interconnected and branching food chains
deforestation
the clearing of forests for agriculture, lumber, and other uses
greenhouse effect
gases (such as ce on dioxide) trap in the sun’s get in the atmosphere
