BFD Of Sugar Flashcards
Removes dirt and other impurities from sugarcane using water to ensure a cleaner process.
Cleaning
Crushes the sugarcane to extract raw juice while separating the fibrous residue (bagasse).
Milling
Heats the raw juice and adds milk of lime (Ca(OH)₂) to remove impurities, producing light juice.
Clarification
Removes excess water from the light juice through evaporation, concentrating the sugar content.
Evaporation
Further concentrates the juice under vacuum conditions to form sugar crystals (massecuite).
Crystallization
Separates sugar crystals from the remaining liquid (molasses) to obtain raw sugar.
Centrifugation
Removes any remaining moisture from raw sugar to produce the final dried sugar product.
