Beta-lipid Oxidation Flashcards
What is a major source of energy for ATP production?
Lipids
What can fats be converted into?
Acetyl-CoA
What is produced when triglyceride + lipase + H2O?
Diglyceride + fatty acid
What is produced when diglyceride + lipase + H2O?
Monoglyceride + fatty acid
What is glycerol converted to?
Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate
What mechanism must fatty acids be broken down by?
Beta-oxidation
Describe what happens in beta-oxidation
Triglyceride broken down into 3x fatty acids + glycerol
1st FA activated to FA-CoA, by CoA
Performs 1 cycle of beta-oxidation = 2nd C lost = acetyl-CoA
Acetyl-CoA enters krebs cycle
Same happens to 2nd FA till all Cs used up
What happens to shorter FA chains?
Fewer oxidative cycles = fewer acetyl-CoA
