Basic Science Flashcards
stages of fetal development from conception
zygote, morula (16 cells), blastocyst (5 days), gastrula, embryo (5-11weeks), foetus (>12weeks)
eukaryotic cell formed by fertilisation between two gametes
zygote
blastocyst structure
inner cell mass that becomes the embryo
outer layer of cells called trophoblast that gives rise to the placenta
When does implantation usually happen?
day 11-12
What is the conceptus?
embryo and all the structures that develop from the zygote (embryonic part of the placenta and its associated membranes)
What are the membranes surrounding the developing embryo?
amnion (fills with fluid to become amniotic sac)
chorion (outermost fetal membrane)
What are the main functions of the yolk sac?
important in early embryonic blood supply
incorporated into primordial gut development
What is merkels diverticulum?
proximal part of the duct persists in about 2% of population
What are the three main process that transform zygote into an embryo?
formation of blastocyst
gastrulation (single layered structure becomes multilayered, formation of 3 germ layers ecto, meso, endo)
organogenesis (starts at end of gastrulation and goes until birth, 3 germ layers form internal organs)
