B4.1 Adaptation to Environment Flashcards
Habitat
Physical location a species resides in
Population
A group of single species living in the same place at the same time
Species
Two organisms which can reproduce fertile offspring
Biome
Large community of organism occupying the same area
Marram grass (adaptation)
Adapted to coastal sand dunes
- strong deep roots -> protect against erosion & provide access to deep water
- coiled structure -> prevent water loss from stomata
Cactus (adaptation)
Adapted to dry deserts
- stomata close during the day & open at night -> prevent water loss
- structure reduces SA:V ratio -> prevents water loss
Red mangrove (adaptation)
Adapted to tropical saltwater swamps
- root membranes -> filter salt
- prop roots -> provide stability
Orangutans (adaptation)
Adapted to jungles
- long limps -> aid in mobility
- orange coat -> camouflage in the canopy
