A4.2 Conservation of Biodiversity Flashcards
Species richness
Number of different species in an area
Species evenness
Relative abundance/similar number of members of all species in an area (i.e same number of bats and same number of mice)
Habitat fragmentation
Urbanization (creating of streets, houses, etc) cuts up natural habitats, isolating populations
In situ conservation
Designing, managing, and maintaining the natural habitats of organisms -> national parks
Ex situ conservation
Conserving organisms outside of their natural habitat -> greenhouses, zoos
Captive breeding
Breeding organisms and then reintroducing them to their habitat - leads to less genetic diversity
Rewilding
Organism reclaim areas, restoring them to pre-human status
EDGE
Measurement of an organisms endangerment by: evolutionary distinctiveness, and global endangerment
