What is Urolithiasis?

Also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys
Cause
Many causes;
Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions, and certain supplements and medications .
Also can bee breed specific, but it is in every species
Types of Urolithiasis? Most common in dogs and cats?
Dogs
- Struvite (magnesium ammonia phosphate (MgNH4PO4), most common
Cystine, Oxalate, Urate, Silicate
o Cats
Struvite, Oxalate
Clinical signs
Hematuria, urination in inappropriate places, difficulty and/or pain during urination
Aim of feeding;
- Reduce the formation of stones
- Increase hydration of the animal to dilute
Nutritional management)
High value protein (to decrease ammonia)
Low purine and sulphur containing amino acids= Decrease formation of cysteine
Alkalizing properties (<7 to reduce the ammonia – mainly for Urate in dalmantation)
Acidify the urine ; struvite, calcium oxalate
