A2. Practical Piglet Weaning Systems and Digestion Physiological Background Flashcards
When is weaning?
Around week 4 – when piglet is btw 7-9 kg
Until day 55 (2months) Ca 20 kg
Possible weaning systems
Traditional system (6w - 42kg) Early weaning (4w - 7-9kg) SEW. (2w)
Problems related to weaning stress
What to consider
Usuallt a BW drop, import with post weaning growth check. (trypsin remains unchanged- proteins)
Immunity, - first 2 weeks gets passive immunity
- Transient feed refusal (atrophy)
- Diarrhea (e.coli)
Phase feeding
21 days or less: 4-phase (+milk replacer)
28 days or older: 3-phase
Milk replacer –> CP 25-26%
Prestarter –> 20-21%
+ additiatves + organis acidis –> help dec pH
Feed program; begin at 3 weeks or earlier
1) Milk replacers. (CP25%)
2) Pre –> day 11. (CP 21%)
3) Starter –> day 42 (13-15kg) (w5) (CP 18%)
4) Grower–> 70 (20-25kg) (w 12) (CP 14%)
Feed supplements
Milk replacer (have to be 25% CP) Organic acids to mage pH more acidic Essential AA (lysine) ca 13% Nutrient and minerals to cover the energy need Ca: P --> 10:7. g/kg
Others agains ecoli
Less digestible fiber
Feaces from boar
Digestion physio
- CH
(undigested starch cause dysbacteriosis and osmotic diarrhoea)
Fat
Protein
Lactose produces lactic acid –> prevnt HCL, keeping the stomach not so acidis.
Not able to digest CH before week 3-4 (amylase)
Sacharase and maltase inactive until week 6-8
HCl secretion) starts on the 5th weeks
0-10day pH 5,2–5,3
Lactobacillli colonizing, produce lactic acid, pH 3,5–5,0
Rennin (chymosin): main enzyme till the 3-4 weeks of age
pH 7-7,4
