A
loss of the blood supply => death of bone tissue
Causes bone destruction and loss of joint function

A
epiphysis of long bones such as the femur

Causes of AVN
A
long-term steroid use
chemotherapy
alcohol excess
trauma

Clinical features of AVN
A
Initially asymptomatic
May develop pain in affected joint

XR findings in AVN
A
- XR may be normal initially
- Osteopenia and microfractures may be seen early
- Collapse of the articular surface may result in the crescent sign
