Autonomic Ganglion of head and neck Flashcards
Submandibular Ganglion Targets
Submandibular Gland
Sublinguinal Gland
(both salivary glands)
Submandibular ganglion motor nerve/pre-synaptic presympathetics
Chorda Tympani (Facial Nerve, CN VII)
Submandibular ganglion sensory root
Lingual nerve (branch of mandibular nerve V3)
Submandibular ganglion post-synaptic sympathetics
Middle Cervical Ganglion, external carotid plexus via facial artery
Submandibular distribution roots
Lingual nerve (V3) branches to glands
location of submandibular ganglion
off of lingual nerve (V3), superior to sub. mandibular gland
Otic ganglion location
located immediately below foramen ovale, where Mandibular Nerve exits skull. Suspended off of mandibular nerve.
Mandibular Nerve –> V3
Otic ganglion targets
Parotid gland
parOTIC
Otic ganglion pre-synaptic parasympathetics/motor root
Lesser Petrosal Nerve (branch of CN IX)
Otic ganglion sympathetics
Middle Cervical ganglion, external carotid via maxillary artery, middle meningeal artery
otic ganglion sensory root
Auriculotemporal branch of Mandibular Nerve (V3)
otic ganglion distribution roots
branches of auriculotemporal nerve (V3)
Middle Cervical Ganglion
Sympathetics for otic ganglion and submandibular ganglion
around external carotid artery and branches
Ciliary Ganglion location
located in orbit lateral to optic nerve
Ciliary ganglion targets
pupil constrictors and dilators, sensory for cornea.
parasympathetic –> constrict pupils
sympathetic –> dilate pupils (fear response)
Contract superior tarsal muscle (keep eyelids open after they have been opened)
Ciliary Ganglion pre-synaptic parasympathetics/ motor root
Oculomotor Nerve (CN III)
Ciliary Ganglion post-synaptic sympathetics
Superior Cervical Ganglion via internal carotid plexus through ophthalmic artery
Ciliary Ganglion sensory root
nasociliary nerve, branch of ophthalmic nerve branch of trigeminal (CN V)
ciliary ganglion distribution root
long and short ciliary nerves (branches of nasociliary CN V1)
long - pupil dilators (sympathetic)
short - sensory to cornea, pupil constrictors (parasympathetic)
pterygopalatine ganglion location
pterygopalatine fossa, hangs off of maxillary nerve (V2)
pterygopalatine ganglion targets
Lacrimal gland, nasal/palatal/pharyngeal mucosa
pterygopalatine ganglion presynaptic parasympathetics/motor root
greater petrosal nerve, branch of CN VII
turns into vidian nerve when it joins deep petrosal nerve(sympathetics) in pterygoid canal
pterygopalatine ganglion postsynaptic sympathetics
deep petrosal nerve turns into vidian nerve when it joins great petrosal nerve(parasympathetic) in pterygoid canal
pterygopalatine ganglion sensory root
maxillary nerve
pterygopalatine ganglion distribution root
- zygomatic nerve (branch of maxillary nerve V2) turns into zygomaticotemporal nerve (V2) which communicates with lacrimal nerve (V1) which leads to lacrimal gland
- nasopalatine nerve (V2)
- Greater and Lesser palatine nerve (V2)
- Pharyngeal nerve (V2)
superior cervical ganglion
supplies ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglion
around internal carotid
