What is attention?
Awareness of the surrounding environment and acknowledgement of cognitive processes.
What is concentration?
The ability to deliberately focus attention on the task and block out distractions.
What is a metaphor for concentration?
Concentration is like a mental spotlight that highlights what’s important, leaving everything else unseen.
What does it mean for an athlete to be “in the zone”?
It describes a state of complete focus where the athlete’s skills match the challenge, also known as flow.
What are distractions in terms of concentration?
Obstacles to maintaining concentration and focus.
How are distractions classified?
As internal distractors and external distractors.
What are internal distractors?
Thoughts or feelings that divert attention from the task, like pain, thoughts, or emotions.
What are external distractors?
Uncontrollable factors that divert attention, such as spectators’ opposition or teammates.
What does Neideffer’s model of attentional foci suggest?
There are two dimensions to attention focus: broad-narrow and internal-external.
What is the broad-narrow dimension in Neideffer’s model?
It refers to how many things we need to observe in the performance environment.
