Anterior and Lateral Leg Flashcards
Compartments of the Leg

Interosseous Membrane
Provides a surface for muscle attachment
Fibres pass inferolaterally from Tibia to Fibula
Helps resist downward pull of muscles attached to the fibula
Superior Tibiofibular Joint

Anterior Compartment of Leg
Number of muscles?
What do they do?
Position of tendons?
4 muscles
Extensors of ankle joint and digits
Tendons are anterior to ankle joint
Lateral Compartment of Leg

Function?
Tendon position?
2 muscles
Evertors of the foot
Tendons are posterior to lateral malleolus

Inferior 1/3 of the anterior fibula and the interosseous membrane to the dorsum of the base of the 5th metatarsal

Anterior Compartment - Peroneus Tertius
Innervation

Deep Peroneal Nerve (L4, L5)

Anterior Compartment - Peroneus Tertius
Function

Dorsiflexes the ankle and assists in eversion of the foot

Extensor Retinacula - Superior Extensor Retinaculum
Attachment

Anterior border of the tibia to the lower end of the fibula

Extensor Retinacula - Inferior Extensor Retinaculum
Attachment (3)

Y shaped so has 3
Stem: Attached to calcaneous laterally
Upper limb: Attached to medial malleolus
Lower Limb: Passes around medial border of foot and blends with dense fascia over abductor hallucis

Muscles of the Dorsum of the Foot
Attachments (EHB and EDB)

Both: Superior surface of calcaneous and the inferior extensor retinaculum
EHB: Base of proximal phalanx of hallux
EDB: Long extensor tendons of toes 2-4

Muscles of the Dorsum of the Foot
Innervation

Deep peroneal nerve (L5/S1)

Nerves of the Leg

Superficial Peroneal Nerve
Branch of?

Common peroneal between peroneus longus and neck of fibula

Superficial Peroneal Nerve
Supplies?

Lateral compartment of leg to muscles, before continuing as cutaneous nerve and innervating distal anteror surface of leg and most of dorsum of foot

Deep Peroneal Nerve
Branch of?

Common peroneal between peroneus longus and neck of fibula

Deep Peroneal Nerve
Supply

Passes through EDL and travels with anterior tibial artery supply all anterior compartment muscles. Crosses ankle joint to supply EDB and EHB. Cutaneous innervation to skin between digits 1 and 2.

Cutaneous Innervation of Anterior and Lateral Leg

Arteries of the Leg
Branches of Poplitieal, Anterior tibial and Posterior tibial arteries

Popliteal gives anterior and posterior tibial
Anterior tibial goes through the interosseous membrane and descends on it
Posterior tibial gives the fibular artery that provides perforating branches to the lateral compartment

Arteries of the Dorsum of the Foot
Dorsalis Pedis branches

Continuation of Anterior Tibial
Gives lateral tarsal, deep plantar and arcuate arteries
Arcuate runs across metatarsals to anastomose with lateral tarsal
