- The sphenoid sinuses are situated posterior to the other sinuses, within the body of the sphenoid bone. The sphenoid sinuses drain out onto the roof of the nasal cavity.
- The body of the sphenoid bone is relatively fragile because of the presence of the sinuses. This is of particular importance as several important structures lie behind this thin plate of bone, including the following:
- The optic nerves and optic chiasm
- The pituitary gland
- The internal carotid arteries
- The cavernous and intercavernous sinuses
The sphenoid sinuses are innervated by the posterior ethmoidal branch of the nasociliary nerves, which is a branch of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve.
