How is Hodgkin’s lymphoma characterized?
proliferation of abnormal, giant, multinucleated cells called Reed-Sternberg cells, which are located in lymph nodes.
Risk factors for Hodgkin’s lymphoma?
Epstein-Barr virus (mono), genetics, exposure to occupational toxins
Manifestations of early disease Hodgkin’s?
painless enlargement of cervical, axillary, or inguinal lymph nodes. Weight loss, fever, night sweats, generalized pruritis w/o skin lesions, cough, dyspnea, stridor, and dysphagia.
Symptoms of advanced disease Hodgkin’s?
hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, anemia, superior vena cava syndrome, enlarged retroperitoneal nodes, jaundice, spinal cord compression.

Genetic and environmental
What is multiple myeloma?
condition in which neoplastic plasma cells infiltrate the bone marrow and destroy bone
Why do patients with leukemia have to take extra precautions against infection?
Leukemia causes bone marrow failure, leading to a decrease in the number and function of WBCs. As a result, the immune defenses are decreased.
What do neutropenic precautions include?
private room, no fresh fruits or vegetables, no live plants or fresh flowers, daily CBCs, frequent handwashing by all visitors, patient wearing mask when outside of the room
