ABG interpretation Flashcards
What is the typical blood picture of respiratory alkalosis?
High pH
High pO2
Low pCO2
Bicarbonate normal
What are the main causes of respiratory alkalosis?
anxiety–> hyperventilation
pulmonary embolism
salicylate poisoning*
CNS disorders: stroke, subarachnoid haemorrhage, encephalitis
altitude
pregnancy
What picture would metabolic acidosis and respiratory acidosis give?
Low pH- Acidosis
High pCO2- Respiratory
How to differentiate acidosis and alkalosis?
Acidosis <7.35
Alkalosis >7.45
What would indicate respiratory acidosis?
pH <7.35
PaCO2 > 6.0 kPa (4-6)
What would indicate respiratory alkalosis?
pH >7.45
PaCO2 < 4.7
What would a low pH and a bicarbonate < 22 mmol/l suggest?
Metabolic acidosis
What would a high pH and a bicarbonate > 26 mmol/l suggest?
Metabolic alkalosis
