9.2 bio Flashcards
simple diffusion
movement of molecules form high concentration to low concentration, in simple diffusion, molecules move directly over the phospholipid bi layer.
facilitated diffusion
Molecules move across the membrane with help of proteins.
osmosis
Diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane to dilute high solute concentrations
endocytosis
the taking in of matter by a living cell by invagination of its membrane to form a vacuole.
active transport
exocytosis
a process by which the contents of a cell vacuole are released to the exterior through fusion of the vacuole membrane with the cell membrane.
surface area:volume
it dictates the efficiency of a cell’s or organism’s ability to exchange materials (nutrients, oxygen, waste) with its environment, with a higher ratio generally meaning faster exchange.
