3.3 bio Flashcards
Trophic levels
The level of an organism is the position it occupies in a food web. Within a food web, a food chain is a succession of organisms that eat other organisms and may, in turn, be eaten themselves.
Autotroph vs heterotroph
Autotrophs are known as producers because they are able to make their own food from raw materials and energy.
Heterotrophs are known as consumers because they consume producers or other consumers.
Herbivore vs. Omnivore vs. Carnivore vs. Detritivore
Herbivores are animals that eat exclusively plant material. Carnivores are animals that eat exclusively animal protein (meat). Omnivores eat both plant and animal material. Detritivores consume dead organic matter (usually plant detritus or dead plants).
Describe differences between food web and trophic cascade diagrams
A trophic Cascade diagram shoes the direct or indirect correlation between species, and if the correlation is positive or negative.
A food web shows what species feed off of what species, and where the energy goes. Also shows what type of consumer the species is.

Keystone species locations
Sea otters are keystone predators in North Pacific
Beavers are a keystone species in the Northeast and West
