3.1 bio Flashcards
niche
all of the environmental factors and interspecies relationships that influence species
mutualism
association between organisms of two different species in which each benefits.
commensalism
an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
parasitism
the practice of living as a parasite in or on another organism.
predation
the preying of one animal on others.
herbivory
the state or condition of feeding on plants.
What happens if the niches overlap a little- a lot
When the niches over lap a little, the competition gets stronger, and the more they overlap, the stronger and stronger the competition gets.
How can niche partitioning increase the biodiversity of a community? What are some ways that species can partition their niches?
allowing more than one species access to a limited resource. By dividing up use of the resources in such a way that the species don’t have to compete with one another, a greater number of species are able to survive.
Compare and contrast different interspecies interactions, give examples of each type
competition (-/-)
- each species are affected negativley
Mutualism (+/+)
- both species benefit from interaction
commensalism (+/0)
- One species benefit, one is not affected
predation, parasitism, herbivory (+/-)
- one species benefits, one is negatively affected
