10.2 bio Flashcards
The order and events of the stages of mitosis
Interphase
-prep for cell division
prophase
-nucleus starts to break down, spindle fibers start to form
metaphase
-the cell’s duplicated chromosomes, which have condensed and become visible, align along the middle of cell
anaphase
-the sister chromatids, which were previously joined, separate and are pulled towards opposite poles of the cell by spindle fibers
telephase
-the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes decondense, preparing the cell for division
Definitions and examples of multipotent, pluripotent, and induced pluripotent stem cells
multipotent
-replace existing cells in organs as they wear out and die, only in specific cells
pluripotent
- have the ability to become any type of tissue cell in your body
induced pluripotent
-sends a signal and can become any tissue cell.
What causes specialized cells to be different from each other
variations in gene expression, how cells are turned on and off, and they have their own purpose.
explain how all of your body cells have the same genetic code but different functions
They express different proteins to have different functions to help with different things and go to different places. It would also be wasteful to make proteins that you don’t need.
