4.2 bio Flashcards
Nitrogen fixation
n this process, the N2 from air is reduced to NH3 (or NH4+), which can be further converted to nitrogen-containing organic compounds, such as proteins and nucleic acids. Generally, N2 fixation proceeds via natural processes by bacteria.
Nitrification
the process of combining, mixing, or filling with nitrogen or one of its compounds.
Denitrification
the loss or removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compounds.
How does BTB work
when CO2 dissolves in water, it forms a weak acid which makes the pit of pure water as 5.5
Predict how BTB (a pH indicator) will change color in a test tube depending upon:
The contents (plant, animal, both) and
The condition (light or dark)
The acidy or alkalinity of the solution it is in
Blue- natural water
Green- slightly acidic water
yellow- more acidic
Humans vs cycles
Carbon- burns wood, fossil fuels (oil, coal, gasses) other forms of carbon
Nitrogen- making fertilizers, burning fossil fuels.
Energy and carbon through cycles
Energu enters from sun and leaves as heat
Carbon is recycles within the ecosystem, transforming from organic to organic forma and back again
Photosynthesis
Sunlight+ C02+ h20 to 02+ glucose
Plants
algae
Cellular respiration
