8.2 bio Flashcards
leading strand
the strand of nascent DNA which is synthesized in the same direction as the growing replication fork
lagging strand
A lagging strand requires a slight delay before undergoing replication, and it must undergo replication discontinuously in small fragments.
semi-discontinous
A mode of DNA replication in which one new strand is synthesized continuously,
Semiconservative replication
produce two copies that each contained one of the original strands of DNA and one new strand.
Okazaki fragments
DNA enzyme functions
Helicase
-unwinds and separates the double-stranded DNA by breaking hydrogen bonds between base pairs
Primase
-Adds RNA primers needed b/c DNA polymerase lll can only add new nucleotides to an existing strand
DNA Polymerase III
-added new nucleotides to build new DNA strands
DNA Polymerase I
-Removed RNA primers and replaces with DNA nucleotides
Ligase
-Puts DNA strand built in fragments together
