9.2 Flashcards
What is simple diffusion?
Diffusion across the membrane that requires no help, it can be done by small, nonpolar molecules.
What is facilitated diffusion?
Diffusion through the membrane with the help of proteins, small, polar molecules can cross.
What do hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic mean?
Hypertonic is when something has more solutes than something else, vice versa for hypotonic, isotonic is when both have the same number of solutes.
What is active transport?
Forcing small molecules across the membrane from a low side to a high side.
What is endocytosis?
Vesicles transporting larger molecules into the cell.
What is exocytosis?
Vesicles transporting larger molecules out of the cell.
What is the importance of the surface area:volume ratio?
The surface area should be maximized and the volume should be minimized because diffusion only works well over short distances.
Which way will solutes diffuse across a membrane?
The solutes would move randomly so likely half the solutes will end up on both sides.
Which way will water diffuse across a membrane?
Water will diffuse towards where there are more solutes.
