1.3 Flashcards
What are the independent and dependent variables?
Someone is testing to see how large a species of plant will grow with or without sunlight.
Independent variable: amount of sunlight
Dependent variable: how large the plant grows to be.
Write a hypothesis for the scenario above.
The plants that receive the most sunlight will have grown the most because plants need sunlight to survive and remain healthy.
What is a control group in an experiment?
The control group is the group that is not tested with the independent variable at all, it is usually used for comparisons.
Why are control groups important?
Control groups are important because they give a standard of what normally happens to compare with what happens when the independent variable is present.
What would a good control group be in a scenario where a new medication is tested?
A good control group would be people who take regular medication, or people who receive no medication at all.
What is an error bar and why are they important?
Error bars show how accurate some data may be, or how reliable it is while comparing with other pieces of data on a graph. They are important because they show how inaccurate the data might be, or the variation present in the data.
