4.1 Flashcards
What usually stays in an ecosystem?
What is constantly coming and going?
Anything with matter usually stays in one ecosystem, sunlight and heat energy are constantly going to and leaving the ecosystem.
What is photosynthesis and the equation for it?
Photosynthesis is the process by which sunlight is converted to chemical energy, the equation for it is
sunlight + CO2 + H2O–> O2 and glucose
What are GPP and NPP?
GPP is gross primary production, it is the amount of energy plants get for photosynthesis. NPP is net primary production, it is the amount of energy that is not lost in respiration and passes on through the next trophic levels
What is cellular respiration and what is the equation for it?
Cellular respiration is the process through which ATP is created, the equation is O2 + glucose –> energy and O2 and H2O.
What is the 10% rule?
Only around10% of energy can be transferred to the next trophic level.
What do energy, biomass, and number pyramids show?
Energy pyramids show the amount of energy passed through each trophic level, biomass pyramids show the amount of biological material at every trophic level, and number pyramids show the amount of organisms at each trophic level.
Can more humans be supported on land through being a vegetarian or eating mostly meat, and why?
A vegetarian diet can support more humans, because less energy has been lost through the trophic levels.
