9 Endocrine System (Lecture) Flashcards
How many cells do the hormones effect?
Nearly all
Hormones communicate…
By being released into the blood and the attaching to receptors
- Protein / Amino Acid hormones
Can never enter a cell. Must attach to a receptor on outside of cell
- Steroid Hormones
Are made of lipids and can pass into a cell. They can also pass into the nucleons and turn genes on and off.
- 4 hormones essential to life
Insulin
Cortisol
Aldosterone
Parathyroid Hormone
Hypothalmus
Central
Controls the pituitary
Infundibulum
Stalk of tissue that connects the Hypothalmus to the pituitary
Anterior lobe of pituitary
TSH - Thyroid stimulating hormone ACTH - Adrenocorticotropic hormone FSH - Follicle stimulating hormone LH - Luteinizing hormone PRL - Prolactin GH - Growth hormone MSH - Melanocyte stimulating hormone
Trisha’s anterior foot looks pretty gross mashed
Posterior Lobe of the pituitary
ADH - Antidiuretic hormone (Vassopressin)
OXT - Oxytocin
We can fix your posterior wall with AO hardware
Thyroid gland
T4 and T3 increase metabolism
T3 is more potent
- Calcitonin
Stimulates osteoblasts to make bone
Thyroid gland
- Parathyroid
Behind the thyroid
Produces PTH (Life threatening)
Manages production absorption and excretion of calcium
Thymus gland
In the chest
Thymosins necessary for maturing of the immune system
Adrenal Gland
Aldosterone retains salt
Cortisol stress hormone
Exocrine glands
Secret to a tube and then to a surface
