7.8 Flashcards
What do Humanistic theories focus on?
Positive aspects of people. The emphasis is on ways people strive to better themselves and reach self-realization/ actualization
Describe self-concept
This is an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and questions about who they are
What is positive regard?
Individuals seek social approval from others, affection, and respect from others
Describe why it is important for an individual to get positive regard that aligns with a person’s thinking.
If a person gets positive regard that aligns with a person’s understanding of themselves it becomes part of their self-concept. If they get a mixed response from others it could cause a person to become anxious and possibly depressed
Draw or describe Roger’s ideas of the self-concept
1) individual seeks approval from others 2) Individual compares their senses of self to what others say 3) Personality takes shape and develops
What is the difference between self-actualization and self-transcendence?
Self-actualization is when an individual is motivated to strive for their full potential. While self-transcendence is when an individual seeks to find a purpose, meaning, and identity in life beyond just themselves
Explain how Maslow’s theory can be used to understand human achievement.
People who have fulfilled the first four levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can focus on expanding their knowledge and pursuing new opportunities. Where people who do not have the first levels fulfilled need to focus on fulfilling their basic needs first
Explain the difference between collectivism and individualism
Collectivism is an ideology or tradition of supporting and promoting the group, family, or society over the individual. While individualism is when the focus is on the individual and a person’s identity is independent from the group, family, or society
Identify how a collectivistic culture and individualistic culture would shape a person’s self-concept
Collectivist cultures often have a person’s self-concept connected with belonging to the group or society. While individualistic cultures focus on an individual’s personal achievement, with their self-concept being more independent from the larger group.
