7.2 The Fate of Pyruvate without Oxygen Flashcards
Without oxygen to accept the H ions and electrons what chain reaction can no longer occur?
The electron transport chain.
In what reaction is the reduced NAD created during glycolysis not oxidised?
The link reaction and the Krebs cycle is where the reduced NAD is not oxidsed.
What happens without a supply of oxidised NAD?
Most of respiration cannot continue.
What is the pyruvate reduced to at the end of glycolysis in the absence of oxygen?
Lactate.
What is regenerated at the end of glycolysis?
The oxidised form of NAD is regenerated.
What does anaerobic respiration mean for an Athlete?
Athelte can continue to partially breakdown glucose to make a small amount of ATP.
How many ATP molecules are produced during anaerobic respiration?
2 therefore anaerobic respiration is not efficent.
Where does lactate build up?
In the muscles.
What can tissues do?
Tolerate high levels of lactate.
What does lactate form in solution?
Lactic acid.
What happens as lactate accumulates?
pH of cell falls, inhibiting enzymes that catalyses glycolysis reactions.
