7.1 Antagonistic Muscles and Movement Flashcards
What is a Muscle?
An organ that produces movement by contraction.
What is a joint?
A junction between two bones.
Why are two muscles needed?
Be causes muscles can only pull and not push therefore two muscles are needed.
Why are muscles described as antagonistic?
Muscles work in pairs. One muscle produces the opposite movement from the other muscle, therefore, the pairs are called antagonistic pairs.
What are extensors?
Muscles that contract due to cause an extension of a joint.
What are flexor muslces?
Flexor muscles contract to reverse movement.
What are the synovial joints in the body?
Hip, knee and ankle.
Why are they called Synovial joints?
They are joints that articulate(move) in the joint that are separated by cavity filled synovial fluid which enables them to move freely.
Ligaments
Control and restrict the amount of movement in a joint.
Joins bone to bone.
Strong and elastic.
Tendons
Attach muscles to bones enabling muscles to power joint movement.
Cartilage
Protects bones within joints.
Absorbs synovial fluid
Acts as a shock absorber.
Fibrous Capsule
Encloses joints.
Synovial fluid
Acts as a lubricant.
Pad of Cartilage
Additional protection.
Synovial membrane
Secretes fluid
