6.2 Cause of Death (Viruses) Flashcards
What type of nucleic acid can viruses have?
RNA or DNA
Where is the RNA and DNA enclosed?
Strand of nucleic acid (RNA or DNA) enclosed thin a protein coat.
Where does a viruses outer envelope come from?
• Virus outer envelope taken from the host cell’s surface membrane.
(Envelope has lipids + proteins)
What does the envelopes also have from the virus?
• Viral envelopes have glycoproteins from the virus itself. (Antigens)
What does the envelope help to do?
• Envelope helps the virus attach to the cell and penetrate the surface membrane.
Why do viruses need to penetrate cells?
• Viruses lack some of the internal structures for growth and reproduction.
Manufacture of new protein particles
- Virus attaches to the host cell.
- Virus inserts nucleic acid.
- Viral nucleic acids replicate.
- Viral protein coat synthesized.
- New virus particles formed.
- Virus particles released die to lysis.
What are the key features of Viruses
