What happens during an asthma attack?
Cells lining bronchioles release histamines
What change do histamines cause during an asthma attack?
Histamines:
• Cause epithelial cells to inflame and swell
• Stimulate goblet cells to make excess mucus
• Smooth muscle in bronchiole walls contract
Due to this, airways narrow and fill with mucus, making it difficult to breathe.
Relievers are an asthma medicine. What are they? How do they work?
Chemicals similar to adrenaline
They attach to active sites on surface membranes of smooth muscle in bronchioles, making them relax and dilating airways
What are steroids?
Reduce sensitivity of the airway lining
