4.2 QR Flashcards
1
Q
How does temperature affect enzymes?
A
More temp = more kinetic energy
More kinetic energy = particles move faster so more successful collisions between enzyme + substrate
2
Q
How do increasing temperatures denature enzymes?
A
- At higher temps. bonds holding enzyme vibrate
- As temp increases, bonds vibrate more until bonds strain then break
- Broken bonds = change in shape of tertiary structure
3
Q
What does it mean when an enzyme denatures?
A
Active site changes so shape no longer complementary to substrate so substrate can’t fit = enzyme no longer a catalyst
4
Q
What is the optimum temperature?
A
Temperature at which enzymes have highest rate of activity
