4.1 QR Flashcards
Define the active site
Area of an enzyme with a shape complementary to a specific substrate, allowing the enzyme to bind with the substrate
What is the lock and key hyopthesis?
Only a specific substrate will bind to an enzyme’s active site
What is the enzyme-substrate complex?
Formed when a substrate binds to an enzyme’s active
site
What is the enzyme-product complex?
Formed when a substrate is converted into a product while bound to the enzyme’s active site
What is the induced fit hypothesis?
Enzyme’s active site changes shape as the substrate enters
What does catalase do?
Breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen
What does amylase do?
Breaks down starch into maltose
Where is amylase produced?
Salivary glands and pancreas
Where is amylase released into?
Saliva and small intestine
What does maltase do?
Breaks down maltose into glucose
What is a protease?
Type of enzyme that catalyses digestion of protein into smaller peptides
