2.5 Ultrastructure of plant cells Flashcards
1
Q
Explain what the cellulose cell wall is
A
- Made of cellulose
- Freely permeable so substances can pass in and out
- Gives the cell its shape
- Contents of cell press against it making it rigid
- Rigidity supports the plant cell and plant as a whole
- Defence mechanism; protects cell’s contents from pathogens
2
Q
Explain what the vacuole is
A
- Membrane lined sac in cytoplasm
- Contains cell sap
- Maintains turgor - so contents of cell push against cell wall and maintain a rigid framework for the cell
3
Q
What is the tonoplast?
A
- Vacuole’s membrane
- Selectively permeable; small molecules can pass but others can’t
4
Q
Explain what a chloroplast is
A
- Organelles responsible for photosynthesis
- Found in green parts of a plant
- Have a double membrane
- Contain DNA and ribosomes
- Can make its own protein
- -Internal membranes provide large surface area for enzymes, proteins and pigment required for photosynthesis
5
Q
What is the stroma?
A
Fluid within the chloroplast (like a cytoplasm)
6
Q
What are thylakoids?
A
An internal network of membranes in the chloroplast, forming flattened sacs
7
Q
What is a granum?
A
Several thylakoids stacked together
8
Q
What are lamellae?
A
Membranes that join a grana (plural)
9
Q
What do grana contain?
A
Chlorophyll pigments where light-dependent reactions occur during photosynthesis
10
Q
What are starch grains?
A
- Starch produced from photosynthesis
- Found in the chloroplast
