Q

Explain what the cellulose cell wall is

A
  • Made of cellulose
  • Freely permeable so substances can pass in and out
  • Gives the cell its shape
  • Contents of cell press against it making it rigid
  • Rigidity supports the plant cell and plant as a whole
  • Defence mechanism; protects cell’s contents from pathogens

Q

Explain what the vacuole is

A
  • Membrane lined sac in cytoplasm
  • Contains cell sap
  • Maintains turgor - so contents of cell push against cell wall and maintain a rigid framework for the cell

Q

What is the tonoplast?

A
  • Vacuole’s membrane

- Selectively permeable; small molecules can pass but others can’t

Q

Explain what a chloroplast is

A
  • Organelles responsible for photosynthesis
  • Found in green parts of a plant
  • Have a double membrane
  • Contain DNA and ribosomes
  • Can make its own protein
  • -Internal membranes provide large surface area for enzymes, proteins and pigment required for photosynthesis
