4.3 QR Flashcards
1
Q
What is an inhibitor?
A
Factor that reduces rate of reaction
2
Q
How does competitive inhibition work?
A
- A molecule with a similar shape to substrate can fit into active site
- This blocks the substrate from entering the active site, so enzyme doesn’t catalyse
- Enzyme can’t carry out its function - inhibited
- Rate of reaction is slowed as substrates bind less often to active sites
3
Q
What is a competitive inhibitor?
A
Competes with substrate to bind to an enzyme’s active site
only temporary so effect is reversible
4
Q
How does non-competitive inhibition work?
A
- Inhibitor binds to allosteric site
- Inhibitor changes enzyme’s tertiary structure so active site changes shape
- Active site no longer complementary to substrate so can’t bind to substrate
- Enzyme can’t carry out its function - inhibited
