7.2 Flashcards
👿
What is an enzyme?
Enzymes are catalysts that speed up chemical reactions.
What is a substrate?
What bonds with an enzyme to create a reaction.
What is an active site?
Where the enzyme and substrate come together.
What is activation energy?
The energy required to create a reaction.
How does reaction rate increase when there is more enzyme concentration?
It increases than flatlines.
What are properties of enzymes?
Specific to a reaction, not consumed in reaction, Made of proteins, and affected by cellular conditions.
How does reaction rate increase when there is more substrate concentration?
It increases than flatlines.
How is reaction rate affected by temperature?
Reaction rate increase until 37 degrees celsius where it then decreases.
How is reaction rate affected by pH?
It increases untill about 2.5 pH (pepsin) then decreases and increases until 7 (average) then decreases and increase until about 8.5 pH (Trypsin) and then decreases.
How would you maximize enzyme activity?
High concentrations of enzymes and substrates at 37 degrees Celsius with a pH of 7.
how would you minimize enzyme activity?
Low concentrations of enzymes and substrates at 0 degrees Celsius with a pH of 0.
