3.1 Flashcards
*Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
What is a niche?
The resources a species uses/ the job it fulfills.
What is a fundamental niche?
The amount of resources a species can use.
What is a realized niche?
The amount of resources actually uses (due to partitioning)
What is mutualism?
Both species benefit (+/+)
What is commensalism?
One species benefits, nothing changes for the other (+/0)
What is Parasitism?
One species benefits, the other suffers. (+/-) Parasitism usually includes the parasite relying on the host for survival.
What is predation?
One species benefits, the other suffers. (+/-) Predation includes one species killing the other and consuming it.
What is herbivory?
One species benefits, the other suffers. (+/-) Same as predation but for plants being eaten.
What is a facilitative relationship?
A relationship where both species benefits but don’t depend on each other for survival.
What is an obligatory relationship?
A relationship where species depend on each other for survival.
What will happen if two species overlap a little?
The niches will partition and the species will adept.
What will happen if two species overlap a lot?
One species will die off in that area.
How can niche partitioning increase biodiversity?
When niches partition, the species often choose to eat different food which leads to more life in the area.
What are ways niches can be partitioned?
Space, time, what is being shared, etc
What relationship do bees and flowers have?
Mutual
