7.1 Flashcards
👿
What are similarities and differences in the structure of an amino acid?
Most of the structure is the same except for the side chains.
How can you tell if an amino acid is nonpolar?
It is mostly carbon and hydrogen with no groups.
How can you tell if an amino acid is polar?
if it has hydroxyl.
How can you tell if an amino acid is basic?
If it has amino in the side chain.
How can you tell if an amino acid is acidic?
If it has carboxyl.
Strand of Amino acids.
Primary
Strands and plates
secondary
Polypeptides
Tertiary
Multiple polypeptides
Quaternary
What happens during denaturation?
The proteins break apart.
What do hydrophobic amino acids do during the tertiary stage?
Go towards the middle
What do hydrophilic amino acids do during the tertiary stage?
Go towards the outside
What do cysteine amino acids do during the tertiary stage?
Bond with each other
What do acidic and basic amino acids do during the tertiary stage?
Bond with each other
What are enzymes for?
They build/break things.
What are pumps for?
Transport
What is infrastructure for?
Support
What are antibodies for?
Fighting viruses.
How would a structure change if a hydrophilic acid was changed for a hydrophobic one?
The structure would be folded in a complete different way because of the different requirements.
