3.2 Flashcards
*sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
What is ecological succession?
The process of an area becoming settled by plants and animals.
What is primary succession?
The first plants to settle an area and add soil over time.
What is secondary succession?
Resettling a settled area, no need to add more soil.
What are pioneer species?
Species that first settle an area like lichens and moss.
What are seral stages?
The stages between pioneer and climax.
What is a climax community?
The largest and least tolerable species like large trees. The end of primary succession.
What is species richness?
The number of different species in an area.
What is species evenness?
The evenness in the number of individuals per species.
What is the difference between primary and secondary succession?
Primary is usually rougher stone while secondary still has soil left over.
What is genetic diversity?
How diverse the genetics of the population are. Higher population, higher genetic diversity.
What is a keystone species?
A species depended on by the environment. Like bees.
What is Ecological Diversity?
The diversity of ecosystems/habitats.
What is an invasive species?
A non-native species that cause harm to an environment.
How do keystone and invasive species affect diversity?
Invasive species could largely spread and overpopulate while the lack of the keystone species may destroy the environment.
There are 6 species. They all have 10 individuals each. Find the Shannon-Wiener Index.
