2.1 Flashcards
to get this stupid assignment over with
What is a population?
A group of the same species at the same place at the same time. Also they can interbreed.
What is population density?
The amount of organisms per area of land.
What is population distribution?
How the populations are spaced throughout the total area.
What is a clumped distribution?
The organisms stay close together like a herd.
What is a random distribution?
Organisms have no clear pattern.
What is a uniform distribution?
Organisms are equally spaced.
Why would a population be uniformly distributed?
Organisms may be territorial or resources may be scarce.
Why would a population be randomly distributed?
Resources are abundant or plants grow where they land.
Why would a population be distributed in a clumped way?
Predators or social reasons
What is the population density of a population of 100 jackals spread around a 1,000 m^2 field?
1 jackal/10 m^2
Researcher gathered data on large mushrooms over 10 quadrants measuring 1m x 1m. These are the results:
1. 4
2. 2
3. 6
4. 1
5. 4
6. 7
7. 2
8. 4
9. 6
10. 2
If the total area is 100m^2, then how many large mushrooms are there?
380 large mushrooms
Scientists did a study on rats. They marked 30 rats and later recaptured 15 marked rats and 73 non-marked rats. Approximately, how many rats are there?
146 rats
There is a new species of tigers that hate each other and will kill each other on site. What do you predict the density and distribution to be?
A uniform distribution with a density of one.
