6.5 Stoichiemtry Flashcards
What is stoichiometry
Stoichiometry is the science of measuring the quantitative proportions or mass ratios in which chemical elements stand to one another
What is the most common type of problem in stoichiometry
The most common stoichiometric problem will present you with a certain amount of a reactant and then ask how much of a product can be formed (could be the other way around)
What is stoichiometry used to do
used to determine the quantity (mass, moles, volume etc.) of one chemical in a chemical reaction given some quantity of another chemical in that reaction.
Why is a balanced chemical reaction formula important
- a balanced chemical reaction equation will give you information on how many moles of each reactant and product are involved in proportion
What do the coefficients give us
The coefficients of a balanced chemical equation give the relative moles of each substance, not their relative masses.
What must you do if you are give the mass in stoichiometry
If the mass of a substance is given, it must be converted to a mole quantity. Then the mole ratio from the coefficients of the balanced equation can be applied.
How is energy related to stoichiometry
The amount of energy absorbed or produced in a reaction is related to the number of moles of reactants and products as related to the coefficients from the balanced equation.
