2.8 VSEPR Theory Flashcards
What is linear
Linear: (Co2) All molecules with only two atoms. The molecules with one in the centre and two others to the sides. It looks like a flat line with 180 degrees between the two (bond angle)
What is Trigonal planar
Trigonal Planar: (BH3) one in the centre, three around it 120 degrees bond angle. Tend to be in group 3A
What is tetrahedral
tetrahedral: (CH4) one in the centre surrounded by four outers. 109.5 degrees bond angle. it is in 3d space
What is trigonal bipyramidal
Trigonal Pyramidal: (NH3) have an octet pair in one directions and three connections. Elements in group 5A tend to be trigonal pyramidal instead of trigonal planar. bond angle of 107 degrees
What is octahedral
octahedral: (SF6) have one in centre surrounded by 6 around. bond angle of 90 degrees
What is bent
Bent: (H20) the lone pairs cause the hydrogen to be pushed to one side. Bond angle varies but is similar to the arrangement with the same number of things.
