6.3 Types of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is a synthesis reaction
Two or more substances, typically elements, combine to form a more complex compound is called a synthesis or combination reaction
Ex 3 H2 + N2 -> 2 NH3
What is a decomposition reaction
One substance breaking into two or more new substances is called a decomposition reaction
Ex 2KClO3 -> 2 KCl + 3 O2
What is a single replacement reaction
When an element and a compound react to form a different element and compound a single replacement reaction has occurred. In this type of reaction one element replaces another element in the compound.
What parts can be replaced in a replacement reaction
In single replacement reactions either a metal will replace the metal, or a non metal will replace a non metal, however an element can only be replaced by an element with either an equal or greater reactivity.
What is the order of reactivity for metals
Li, K, Sr, Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Zn, Cr, Fe, Ni, Sn, Pb, H, Cu, Ag, Hg, Pt, Au
What is the order of reactivity for nonmetals
F, Cl, Br, I
What is a double replacement reaction
A double replacement reaction occurs when two compounds react to form two new compounds, usually ionic compounds, typically occurs in water
What is evidence for a double replacement reaction
Evidence for this type of reaction include, the formation of a new solid, or the neutralization of an acid/base producing water
What is a combustion reaction
A combustion reaction occurs when a fuel combines rapidly with air
Ex: 2 Mg + O2 -> 2 MgO
What is a neutralization reactoon
When an acid and a base react to form a salt and water a neutralization reaction has occurred
