4.2 Molar Mass Flashcards
What is molar mass
The molar mass of an element is defined as the mass of exacty 1 mol (6.02 x 1023atoms) of that element. It is used to convert between mass (grams) and mols.
Why do we need molar mass
Since scientists can’t measure moles they need to calculate them based on the molar mass
What is molar mass of compounds
Molar mass of a compound is the molar mass of each of the atoms it holds added together, 1 mole of CO has 1 mole of carbon + 1 mole of oxygen, 1 mole of H2O has 2 moles of hydrogen + 1 mole of oxygen. determine the molar mass and added them together
What do we use to convert between grams, moles, particles, molecules, and atoms
MOLAR MASS - converts between grams and moles
AVOGADRO’S NUMBER - converts between moles and particles
CHEMICAL FORMULA - converts between molecules and atoms
